I also though I'd share with you my design process from start to finish, I have been told its different and weird how big I work, so for those who may be interested here it is...
This design first started with an idea, and was followed by a horrible stetch in my sketchbook, and a very small silhouette thumbnail that I thought may make an intersting shape.
Next, using whatever paper I found around my studio, I begin scribbiling and developing the character, really keeping in mind the original silhouette idea. I keep this stage super rough and loose, taping random papers together when needed as the drawing became bigger and bigger.
Then I throw some nicer paper over the rough madness, and begin to redraw it completely. I find it really good to not just trace over the original drawing, but use it more as refernce as you re-draw the character, figuring out the overall shapes and attitude. I think its important at this stage to still keep realy rough and loose, and just try and get as much feeling into the drawing as possible.
After Im happy with the rough, Ill go over the same drawing and tighten it up. Work out the facial features, hands, and small details.
Next I scan into photoshop, play around with levels and all that fun stuff, and then paint under my linework. And then I get this...
I got a bunch more space characters that im working on, so stay tuned.
